Hi there

Major apologies first of all for my failure to report before this. The main
reason being that, not surprisingly, I've spent most of the last five weks
sitting on my bike; when we stop for the night, there is just about time
to eat, drink, wash clothes, repair bioke etc before statring the whole process
all over again.

On the weekly rest days the nearest internet cafe is besieged by cyclists
who are all much younger than me and therefore beat me to the machines and
can easily keep me at bay if I try to get a turn. Also until a week ago we
were cycling through Europe and while this was interesting and eventful at
times everyone's been there so I didn't think you'd want to to know about
Rome, Zurich etc . We had some reasonable press coverage along the way including
the front page (2 pictures) of one of the Luxembourg dailies - well it was
August.

Any way for the past two weeks we've been in the Middle East and the European
leg is   a distant memory. it has been incredibly hectic as we only spend
a night in each place but thre has been loads packed into the time that we
are not actually on the bikes. This has included overnight stays in the reugee
camps in Syria & Lebanon and now eventually in the West Bank.
Weere subjected to   predictable harassment by the authorities both e border
and at the first checkpoints we encountered in Israel and lost two days from
our schedule - apparently it made last Saturday's Independent- but we're
here now and I'm writing this from Ramallah following an evenful day in Nablus.
Unfortunately Jenin was one of the lost days and we are trying to find time
to get up there before we have to leave as I really need to geet rid of these
books which I have loaded and unloaded more times than I care to remember.
